Discovering Africa differently: Roobens Fils shares his travels and encounters

A safari in Tanzania, a city break in Nairobi, time on Kenya’s beaches… Travel begins with curiosity and takes shape through the people we meet. Joining Nicolas Beaubrun on the Trotters Club in November 2025, Roobens Fils, founder of Dunia Travel and author of *Être noir et voyager* (*Being Black and Travelling*), shares his favourite African destinations and his experiences as a traveller.

Africa: countless journeys to imagine

When you picture a trip to Africa, what comes to mind? Savannah landscapes, a vibrant city, a mountain to climb or a beach where you can take your time doing nothing at all?

This diversity inspired Dunia Travel, an agency specialising in travel across the African continent. Its name evokes the “world” in Swahili, reflecting the openness at the heart of the project.

During the interview, its founder explains that he wanted to share the discoveries made on his own journeys: landscapes, activities and experiences that challenge sometimes narrow perceptions of the continent.

From Morocco to South Africa, Senegal to Namibia, each country offers a different journey. The aim is to find the one that matches your interests and your pace.

Tanzania: combining different travel experiences

Among the destinations discussed, Tanzania holds a special place. He particularly appreciates the opportunity to combine several experiences within a single trip.

Watching wildlife on safari, extending the journey with a beach escape to Zanzibar or considering a climb up Kilimanjaro: there are many ways to explore the country, depending on your interests.

This variety makes it possible to plan a stay around more than one activity. The key is to build an itinerary suited to the time available and, for physically demanding adventures, your level of preparation.

Kenya: a favourite between city life and wide-open spaces

During this November 2025 conversation, Kenya also inspires enthusiasm following a recent visit.

His account begins in Nairobi, highlighting its sightseeing opportunities and museums. It continues into natural landscapes, along hiking trails and around Mount Kenya, before reaching the coast near Mombasa and Diani Beach.

Safaris are also part of the experience, with places such as the Masai Mara and Amboseli.

What appeals to him is precisely this diversity: moving from an urban experience to nature and then to the seaside. An invitation to look beyond Kenya’s safari image.

Travelling also means wondering how you will be welcomed

The conversation then turns to a more personal dimension of travel. In his book Être noir et voyager, the author shares his own experiences alongside those of other Black travellers.

The project grew out of a year spent travelling solo and the questions he regularly received: what is the welcome like in a particular destination? Should travellers be concerned about racism? What situations might they encounter?

These questions play a practical role in planning a trip. They touch on feeling safe, how others perceive you and being able to travel with peace of mind.

He describes repeated requests for photographs in places where residents rarely meet Black people, as well as comparisons with celebrities he does not resemble. These experiences illustrate how different travellers may experience the same destination differently.

Stories that also make room for generosity

His account is not limited to difficulties. He also recalls memorable gestures of hospitality: an invitation to dinner, spontaneous help or a conversation started in the street.

He particularly remembers encounters in Central Asia, where curiosity sometimes opened the door to warm exchanges.

He also reflects on a trip to Iran in 2017, remembering an especially kind welcome. This personal account belongs to the circumstances of that past journey; it does not describe current travel conditions in the country.

A shared thread emerges from these memories: the people we meet can leave as lasting an impression as the landscapes we explore.

Travel inspired by personal passions

During the interview, Dunia Travel’s founder also discussed his ambition to develop themed trips, including yoga and wellness experiences in Kenya.

Presented in November 2025, these plans illustrate an approach to travel that begins with an experience you want to enjoy, then explores a destination through it. Current offers and availability should be checked directly with the agency.

Nature, culture, relaxation or sport: the starting point remains the traveller’s interests. The quality of the stay then takes shape through careful planning, the choice of stops and conversations with people who know the destination.

An invitation to broaden your horizons

Through his journey as a traveller, author and entrepreneur, our guest encourages a more curious view of destinations and greater attention to individual experiences.

His account reminds us that travel requires information and preparation, but also grows through listening and meeting others. A way to discover the world while leaving room for what we had never imagined.
