Athens in Four Days: From Meze in Piraeus to Moving Moments at the Acropolis
A meze lunch near the sea, an open-air cinema, a pottery workshop and an evening of music at the foot of the Acropolis… Athens reveals itself through its monuments and its shared moments alike. A cultural and culinary escape that invites you to slow down.

Along the streets of Athens, the Acropolis forms a backdrop to leisurely walks, café stops and discoveries.

I wanted to revisit a wonderful experience in Greece: four days spent in Athens this past June. Beyond the images of the Parthenon and the Acropolis, it is the shared moments that have stayed with me: a meze lunch near the sea, a heartfelt welcome and an evening of music when, sitting in the third row of an ancient theatre, I could literally feel the stage vibrating.
From the narrow streets of Plaka to Varvakios Central Market, from the small harbour of Mikrolimano to the terraces of Monastiraki, this trip revealed the many sides of the Greek capital. This is a city that deserves time to unfold, and far more than a brief stopover.
Flying with SKY express: Our First Hours in Athens
The journey begins at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, with a direct flight to Athens operated by SKY express. For this trip, from 5 to 8 June 2026, our late-afternoon arrival leaves time to reach the hotel before a first evening in the city.
We settle into the Hotel President, our base for three nights. The itinerary then alternates cultural discoveries, walks and food stops, with some free time to catch our breath.
This Friday-to-Monday format allows two full days to explore. It encourages you to choose your priorities rather than try to see everything.
A First Evening Under the Stars at Ciné Thisio
After dinner in the city centre, the trip begins with an experience that immediately sets the tone: a screening at Ciné Thisio.
At this open-air cinema, the illuminated Acropolis forms part of the evening’s backdrop. The pleasure comes as much from the setting and the chance to enjoy Athens outdoors after dark as it does from the film itself.
It is a lovely way to begin a city break: discovering a cultural venue while gently finding your bearings. Before booking, check the language of the film and its subtitles so you can fully enjoy the screening.
From Varvakios Market to a Pottery Workshop
The following morning brings a change of atmosphere at Varvakios Central Market. The stalls, conversations and busy traders offer an immersion in everyday Athenian life.
You browse the produce, listen to conversations and discover a city whose life extends well beyond its major historic sites. This stop grounds the trip in encounters with the people who keep the capital moving.
A pottery workshop continues the discovery in a different way. After observing, it is time to work with your hands and shape the clay. This creative pause feels entirely at home in a journey where forms and objects play such an important role.
In Piraeus, a Simple Meal and a Lasting Memory
At lunchtime, we head to Piraeus for one of the most memorable moments of the trip.
In a small restaurant not far from the sea, plates of meze arrive in the middle of the table. Everyone tastes, shares and helps themselves to a little more of whatever they enjoy. Conversation flows throughout the unhurried meal.
The welcome is sincere and personal, without fuss or pretence. You simply feel well looked after. That simplicity is what makes the lunch so special: flavours to discover together and the pleasure of letting the moment linger.
A meal can become a lasting travel memory without trying to impress. Here, sharing meze and enjoying a warm welcome were enough.
We continue with a walk through the Mikrolimano neighbourhood, before returning to the hotel for some welcome free time. A reminder that even a short break benefits from proper pauses.
At the Odeon, Performers and Audience Become One
Towards the end of the day, we return to the narrow streets of Plaka, stopping at Brettos Bar, recognisable by its colourful bottles. After dinner, we head to the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, as part of the Athens Epidaurus Festival, for a concert by Stavros Xarchakos (Σταύρος Ξαρχάκος), the celebrated Greek composer and conductor.
This performance will remain one of the highlights of the trip.
Sitting in the third row, I could literally feel the stage vibrating. Being so close to the musicians almost made it feel as though I were part of the orchestra. The music was something you felt as much as heard.
And then there was the audience. The theatre was full, and spectators sang along together. Despite the scale of the venue, an extraordinary intimacy emerged: their voices joined those on stage in true harmony.
A connection between the artists and the audience made it feel like much more than a concert. In this ancient theatre, emotion flowed between the rows and the musicians. We had come to watch a performance and found ourselves at the heart of a shared experience.
This evening reflects an experience in June 2026. For a future trip, check performance schedules and venue access arrangements for your chosen dates.
A Day of the Acropolis, Museums and Rooftop Views
Sunday begins with a visit to the Acropolis, followed by the Acropolis Museum. These two complementary stops add historical depth to the monuments glimpsed from the city’s neighbourhoods.
After lunch, the Museum of Cycladic Art continues the day’s cultural exploration. The shapes of the ancient works echo the hands-on experience of the previous day’s pottery workshop. Connections emerge naturally between the different parts of the trip.
Then comes the pleasure of heading upwards. From a rooftop in Monastiraki, the Acropolis takes its place in the wider landscape, surrounded by the capital’s rooftops.
Having explored it up close, we now admire it from a distance. Another way to appreciate the monument’s presence in Athenian life, before one final evening around the table.

A City Break at Your Own Pace
Spanning four days and three nights, with a Friday-evening arrival and a Monday-morning departure, this escape shows how much two full days of discovery can offer.
To take inspiration from it, choose a few experiences that matter to you and leave room around them: a major attraction, a neighbourhood, a shared meal and a cultural evening. Depending on your interests, a lighter itinerary can be just as rewarding, allowing more time in a museum or by the sea.
Of course, I remember the views of the Acropolis. But it is also the conversations around the table and the voices of the audience at the Odeon that make me want to return to Athens.
