Travel Disruptions in Spain: Who to Contact

The October 28, 2026, train collision near Urda, in Spain’s Toledo province, has left families grieving and disrupted travel on the Madrid–Andalusia corridor. For Americans in Spain—or preparing to travel there—the immediate questions are practical: where to seek help, how to rearrange transportation, and which expenses insurance might cover.

The accident involved a Renfe AVE train and an Iryo service. Spain declared three days of official mourning, from October 29 through October 31. Authorities are investigating the circumstances of the collision. grupo.renfe.com

For travelers, the right contact depends on whether they need emergency assistance, information about a loved one, or help with a disrupted itinerary.

If You or a Family Member Were Directly Affected

For an immediate medical or safety emergency in Spain, call 112.

U.S. citizens needing consular assistance can contact the U.S. Embassy in Madrid or the U.S. Consulate General in Barcelona. The State Department lists these emergency contacts:

  • Madrid, after-hours emergencies: +34 91 587 2200
  • Barcelona: +34 93 280 2227

Check the State Department’s Spain information page for current contact details. Travel.State.gov

Renfe and Iryo also established dedicated assistance lines for victims and their families: 900 10 10 20 for Renfe and 900 001 403 for Iryo. Spanish toll-free numbers may not connect from outside Spain or through some foreign mobile services. www.diplomatie.gouv.fr

Check Your Specific Train Before Going to the Station

Following the collision, services were suspended on the Madrid–Andalusia high-speed line. Check directly with your operator before leaving for the station; disruption on one corridor does not establish the status of every train in Spain. https://grupo.renfe.com/

A separate Renfe drivers’ strike on October 29, announced before the accident, also caused cancellations. Renfe offered free ticket changes and cancellations for that day. Do not assume those arrangements apply to later departures without confirmation. https://grupo.renfe.com/
If your service is affected, ask the operator about:

  • A replacement departure or alternative route;
  • A refund if you decide not to travel;
  • Meals or accommodation while waiting, where applicable.

Ask before purchasing expensive replacement transportation. A flight, rental car or long-distance taxi is not automatically reimbursable.

European Passenger Rights Can Protect Americans Too

You do not have to be an EU citizen to benefit from European passenger protections. What matters is whether the journey falls within the relevant rules.

For covered rail services, an expected arrival delay of at least an hour can trigger refund or rerouting options and assistance obligations. Cash compensation is a separate question and may depend on the cause of the disruption. Your Europe

For flights, EU passenger-rights rules generally cover departures from Spain to the United States, including flights operated by U.S. airlines. For a flight from the United States to Spain, EU coverage generally depends on whether an EU airline operates it. Your Europe

However, a canceled train does not automatically make an independently booked flight refundable.

If You Might Miss Your Flight Home

Contact your airline before the flight departs. Explain the disruption and ask about rebooking options, any applicable travel waiver, and the consequences for the rest of your reservation.

If your train and transatlantic flight were purchased separately, do not assume the connection is protected. Send the airline your cancellation notice and keep its response.

Also notify hotels, tour operators and rental companies if your arrival changes. If you booked a package, contact the organizer promptly and ask how it will handle the affected services. Package arrangements can carry protections beyond those attached to separate reservations. www.europe-consommateurs.eu

Call Your Insurer’s Assistance Service Before Major Expenses

Look for coverage labeled trip delay, trip interruption, missed connection, emergency medical treatment or medical evacuation. These benefits have different conditions, limits and exclusions.

Ask the insurer:

  • Is this event a covered reason?
  • Which additional expenses are eligible?
  • Is advance authorization required?
  • What documentation and claim deadline apply?

Do not assume your regular U.S. health plan covers treatment in Spain. The State Department recommends checking overseas coverage, and Medicare generally does not cover medical care outside the United States, with limited exceptions. Medical evacuation may require separate coverage. The U.S. government does not pay travelers’ medical bills abroad. travel.state.gov

Keep a Record of Every Change

Save tickets, cancellation messages, booking confirmations, correspondence and itemized receipts. Request written confirmation of the disruption when available.

Keep track of refunds already received so you do not claim the same expense twice. If you decide to cancel an otherwise operating trip because you feel uncomfortable traveling, ask about cancellation terms first: concern alone does not guarantee reimbursement.

For U.S. travelers, the practical order is straightforward: emergency services for immediate danger, consular services for serious difficulties, the operator for disrupted transportation, and your insurer for benefits covered by your policy.
