Vietnam Airlines: A Taste of Vietnam Onboard
A bowl of pho, regional noodle dishes, fruit grown in Vietnam… Discovering the country can begin before touchdown. Recognised at the World Culinary Awards 2026, Vietnam Airlines puts Vietnamese cuisine at the heart of its inflight dining experience, offering travellers an early taste of their destination.

The first memory of a trip does not always begin outside the airport. It can take shape during the flight, through an unfamiliar flavour, a newly discovered ingredient or a dish that sparks curiosity about the country ahead.
Vietnam Airlines embraces this connection between travel and food. The national carrier has won the World’s Best Culinary Airline 2026 title at the World Culinary Awards. It succeeds Air France, winner of the four previous editions listed by the organiser, and becomes the first Asian airline to receive the distinction.
A First Encounter With Vietnam’s Regional Cuisines
For curious travellers, the appeal lies in what is served. In its statement of 30 October, Vietnam Airlines highlights an offering rooted in the country’s culinary traditions: pho, Hue-style beef noodle soup, Quang noodles and Hoi An bánh mì.
These specialities evoke different regions and provide an introduction to Vietnam’s culinary diversity. A meal might inspire passengers to seek out the same dish after landing, compare recipes or learn more about its ingredients.
The airline says it adapts its preparations to the requirements of inflight service, including flavour, serving temperature and presentation. Dishes vary by route and travel class, however, so this selection is not a menu available on every flight.

Local Ingredients With Regional Stories
The approach extends to fruit and agricultural produce. Depending on the season and availability, Vietnam Airlines mentions Luc Ngan lychees, Hung Yen longans, Dien Bien macadamia nuts and Dong Nai cashews.
These names introduce another way to discover Vietnam: through its crops, harvests and the communities behind them.
According to figures supplied by the airline, Vietnam Airlines and its affiliated catering companies used 2,260 tonnes of fruit and vegetables grown in Vietnam during the first nine months of 2026. This total covers those operations as a whole, rather than any particular route.
The airline also explains that its *Heritage* magazine and inflight entertainment share information about the origins of certain ingredients and their associated regional traditions.
The Lotus as a Culinary Inspiration
Vietnam Airlines’ emblem, the lotus, also inspires its menus. Its seasonal “Chạm Sen” menu, presented in English as *Touch The Lotus*, explored different parts of the plant, including its seeds, stems, roots and leaves.
The official page for this experience specified availability from 15 to 30 June 2026 on selected domestic and international flights. It is therefore an example of a seasonal offering, rather than a permanent menu passengers should expect on their next flight.
This approach adds a cultural dimension to the meal, revealing how an ingredient familiar in Vietnam can appear in different preparations and reflect local traditions.
What the Award Means for Travellers
A culinary award can draw attention to an airline, but choosing a flight also involves schedules, fares, baggage allowances and the comfort you are looking for.
To understand the dining experience available, check the services offered on your specific route and in your cabin. Photographs of Business Class dining or a special seasonal menu do not necessarily represent the meal served in another travel class.
If you have dietary requirements, check which special meals are available and how far in advance they must be requested.
Vietnam Airlines’ stated ambition to achieve five-star service standards by 2030 remains a goal. Its 2026 culinary award recognises its dining offering; it does not constitute a five-star rating for the airline’s services as a whole.
An Invitation to Keep Exploring After Landing
An inflight meal can become a first encounter with a country. A broth may inspire a visit to a small local restaurant, a piece of fruit may spark interest in a market, and a regional speciality may suggest another stop on the itinerary.
By placing Vietnamese flavours at the centre of its offering, Vietnam Airlines aims to make the flight an introduction to the destination.
For food-loving travellers, that could be the beginning of the adventure: discovering a flavour in the air, then seeking it out once in Vietnam.
