THE WORLD OF YOUR PASSIONS

Lyon: Hats Off to the Tourist Office Teams

Almost a week after the fire at the Tourism Pavilion on Place Bellecour, the teams at ONLYLYON Tourism and Conventions continue their work. A replacement visitor centre, support from local information points and guided tours continuing: despite the shock, they quickly put practical solutions in place to assist visitors and Lyon residents.

A Historic Building Lost, the Teams Unharmed

Built in 1852, the Pavilion had welcomed visitors since 1924. According to ONLYLYON, it opened 363 days a year and received almost 200,000 people annually. Its destruction represents the loss of a historic building and a familiar landmark where tourists and residents came for advice and ideas.

In its statement published on LinkedIn, the organisation says it had closed the premises as a precaution late that morning. No team members were injured. It also thanks the firefighters and police for their intervention. The statement alone does not establish the precise circumstances of the fire.

A Swift Response to Keep Welcoming Visitors

A replacement welcome point was announced from Tuesday 20 October at Le Rectangle, on the Saône side of Place Bellecour. The teams also highlighted the network of almost 50 accredited visitor information points and confirmed that guided tours were continuing for both individuals and groups.

This response deserves recognition. Behind a new address and services continuing are professionals adapting their work, sharing information and remaining available in difficult circumstances.

Hospitality Begins With People

The loss of the Pavilion means far more than a change of address. It affects those who worked there and the many visitors who made it part of their discovery of Lyon.

The swift response of ONLYLYON’s teams, guides and local partners is a reminder that hospitality begins with people. Their professionalism preserves that essential connection with travellers: a welcoming presence, helpful advice and a desire to share their city.
